Canberra, April 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Australia in July as part of a broader regional tour that will also include stops in Indonesia and New Zealand. Local media reported this information on Friday, citing government and diplomatic sources.
According to reports, PM Modi will first travel to Indonesia, followed by a visit to New Zealand on July 7 and 8. He is expected to arrive in Australia on July 9 and 10. This visit comes at a time when strategic, economic, and diaspora relations between India and Australia are strengthening.
The Australia Today report suggests that PM Modi will have engagements in both Sydney and Melbourne during his visit. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s office is keen on hosting an official event in Sydney to further solidify the strategic partnership between the two nations.
However, a significant public event addressing the Indian community is more likely to take place in Melbourne. The report indicates that two major indoor venues in Melbourne, with capacities of approximately 14,000 and over 35,000 people, have been inspected for this purpose. These venues are considered suitable due to their indoor facilities and roofs, especially given Melbourne’s chilly weather in July.
There is noticeable enthusiasm among Australian business and community organizations regarding the Prime Minister’s potential visit. The Australia-India Business Council, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, is attempting to organize a special event with PM Modi. Meanwhile, the Australia-India CEO Forum is also working to host a high-level meeting. However, sources suggest that only one of these organizations may be granted the opportunity to host an official event, and discussions are ongoing.
Notably, PM Modi previously visited Sydney in May 2023, where he participated in the Quad Leaders’ Summit. During that trip, he held a bilateral meeting with PM Albanese, met with leaders from the Australian industry, and addressed the Indian community.
Several significant agreements were reached during that visit, including the Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement (MMPA) and terms of reference for the Green Hydrogen Taskforce. Announcements were also made regarding the opening of an Indian consulate in Brisbane and the establishment of an Australian consulate in Bengaluru.
Stephen Dziedzic, a foreign affairs journalist with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, mentioned that if this visit proceeds, it would be part of a strong series of global leaders visiting Australia.
Overall, PM Modi’s proposed visit to Australia could redefine India-Australia relations and further strengthen trade, investment, and community ties between the two countries.
