New Delhi, March 18: Between April and July of this year, 59 members of the Rajya Sabha will retire, including MPs from various parties across 20 states, with 9 female members among them. On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Rajya Sabha, stating that such moments bring emotional significance to the house every two years.
He expressed gratitude to Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan for allowing him to share his sentiments on this special occasion. Notable figures such as former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge are also among the retiring members.
During his speech, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of discussions on various topics within the house. He noted that every member’s contribution is vital. While there are both sweet and sour experiences, when the moment of farewell arrives, it is natural for everyone to rise above party sentiments and share a collective feeling that their colleagues are moving on to new responsibilities. Some departing members may return, while others will contribute their experiences to society in new ways.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged Deputy Chairman Harivansh, praising his dedication to maintaining the dignity of the house. He highlighted Harivansh’s calm demeanor, gentle speech, and ability to earn trust as always inspiring. Modi noted that during challenging times, the responsibility of conducting the house often falls on Harivansh, a task he has managed with great skill. Outside the house, he has engaged with youth across the country, raising awareness about national issues and fostering a sense of patriotism. Harivansh is not only a gifted writer but has also established himself as a diligent personality.
Modi expressed confidence that the members who are not retiring this time will enrich the new members with their experiences, while the newcomers will empower the house with their energy and fresh ideas. He concluded by stating, “I want to emphasize that second opinions play a significant role in democracy. Just as we seek advice from experienced individuals before making important decisions in our personal lives, the diverse views and perspectives of various members in this house enrich the debate. This diversity is our democracy’s greatest strength. With this spirit, I wish all retiring members a bright future and sincerely thank them for their contributions.”
