Piyush Goyal Engages in Virtual Talks with Qatars Trade Minister to Strengthen Supply Chains

New Delhi, April 23: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a virtual meeting on Thursday with Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Sayed, Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Trade Affairs. The discussion focused on enhancing trade and strengthening supply chains between the two nations.

In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Goyal stated, “A meaningful virtual dialogue was conducted with Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Trade Affairs, Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Sayed.”

He added, “We discussed ways to further strengthen our bilateral trade and investment relations, as well as enhance the resilience of our supply chains. We are prepared to deepen our strategic partnership in the future.”

This conversation comes at a time when tensions between the U.S. and Iran have completely halted movement through the Strait of Hormuz, causing significant disruptions in supply chains. As a result, Qatar and several Gulf countries are struggling to export their petroleum and other products.

Approximately 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Recently, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf stated that the strait will not be reopened under current conditions.

He claimed that the U.S. has blocked the Strait of Hormuz, which he described as a violation of the ceasefire, targeting Iranian ports. He further noted that a complete ceasefire is only possible if the U.S. lifts its blockade of the strait.

The U.S. Central Command has stated on social media that under the American blockade against Iran, the U.S. military has instructed 31 ships to turn back or return to port.
