Islamabad, March 22: A recent report has raised concerns about Pakistan’s foreign policy. Despite existing defense agreements like the Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement (SMDA) with Saudi Arabia, Islamabad’s response to Iranian attacks on Saudi territory has been notably subdued.
In an article published by The Eurasian Times, journalist Salahuddin Shoaib Chaudhry noted that despite decades of financial and strategic support from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan continues to adopt a policy aimed at appeasing Iran.
The article highlights that the relationship between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan spans over seven decades. The deployment of Pakistani military personnel for Saudi security has long been an established arrangement. Additionally, millions of Pakistani citizens work in Saudi Arabia, significantly contributing to Islamabad’s foreign currency earnings.
The report indicates that following repeated attacks from Iran, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan warned that the Kingdom’s patience in the face of Iranian aggression is “not limitless,” suggesting that military action remains a viable option. Meanwhile, Arab and Islamic nations have jointly urged Tehran to cease its aggressive behavior.
Amid ongoing conflicts in West Asia, Iranian President Masoud Pajeshkian publicly apologized on March 7 for aggressive actions against West Asian countries. However, reports indicate that Iran continues its attacks on Gulf nations, revealing Tehran’s intent to not only harm Israel but also to disrupt the economies of West Asian countries by targeting their critical infrastructure.
The Gulf nations most affected by the conflict include Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar. Doha has reportedly spent funds supporting Iranian proxy groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, aiming to maintain pressure on Israel.
In the meantime, UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Sultan Al Jaber, warned that attacks on energy infrastructure are impacting operations and could have severe consequences if tensions escalate.
Amid rising Iranian assaults, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry has declared several Iranian diplomats as ‘persona non grata.’ Reports suggest that a significant number of Iranian nationals in the UAE, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Basij, are attempting to incite unrest against the government.
The article also mentions that Iranian operatives are recruiting Pakistani citizens in the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia to conduct online propaganda campaigns against these countries and their leadership. Previously, Turkish journalist Uzay Bulut reported that a Pakistan-based network is spreading AI-driven Iranian propaganda on social media platforms.
