New Delhi, February 23: Under the leadership of Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir, the military has set a new benchmark in transnational repression. Reports indicate that since Munir took command in November 2022, abuses have escalated significantly.

Critics, journalists, and activists living abroad are facing threats, surveillance, and even murder. Human rights organizations report that the Munir regime has targeted Pakistani expatriates in countries like the United States, the UK, and Canada. This includes pressuring families and legal harassment, reflecting the growing trend of repression in Pakistan.

According to a report by Greek City Times, analysts and experts worldwide have noted that Munir has adopted this “dangerous” approach, openly warning those associated with former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The report states that Munir justifies surveillance and violence against Pakistani citizens abroad by portraying opponents as threats to their existence.

The 27th constitutional amendment in Pakistan, implemented at the end of 2025, has granted Munir “lifelong immunity,” created a puppet judiciary, and eliminated judicial oversight. This has empowered him to target opponents globally.

The report elaborates, “The Pakistani military is conducting a dirty international repression campaign against critics in Western countries. This is no coincidence; it follows a pattern where those criticizing the Pakistani government are hunted down, threatened, attacked, and intimidated in their homes abroad, while their families are exploited back in Pakistan.”

It further states, “The army’s aim is simple: psychologically break the wrongdoers, force them into silence, and warn others that exile does not guarantee safety. This extends Pakistan’s domestic pressure model to Western streets, utilizing criminal proxies and intimidation tactics.”

Since Munir assumed command of the Pakistani Army, transnational repression has surged. The report mentions that attacks have involved the use of weapons, arson, acid, and trained operatives who operate with the confidence that democratic governments will not intervene.

The latest and clearest evidence is from the United Kingdom. In January 2026, local media reported that the Scotland Yard’s Counter-Terrorism Command has taken over the investigation of “highly targeted” attacks on Pakistani political opponents residing in the UK, including supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The report states, “Attacks have been ongoing, ranging from beatings to gun assaults, arson attempts, and repeated property damage. One victim, Mirza Shahzad Akbar, a human rights lawyer and former cabinet member during Khan’s tenure, was attacked when assailants confirmed his identity and then repeatedly punched him in front of his family.”

Despite the increasing evidence of the Pakistani government’s alleged role in international repression, the response from Western countries has been “very” inadequate.
