Opposition Targets Election Commission Over Voter List Controversy

New Delhi, October 3 (Daily Kiran) : Opposition parties, including Congress, have launched a direct attack on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, labeling him as merely a pawn in a larger game. They allege that the Election Commission is altering its decisions due to pressure from a movement initiated by Rahul Gandhi two years ago. The opposition argues that without a free and fair electoral roll, genuine elections cannot occur, calling for the Commission to apologize to the nation and clarify who is behind the alleged attempts to exclude legitimate voters from the list.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury stated, “The Election Commission must first apologize to the public regarding the new efforts for the SIR and openly explain what happened, who directed it, and why. Under the pressure of ongoing movements, the Election Commission is changing its approach. This movement, started by our leader Rahul Gandhi, has since gained support from other parties. The slogan he raised has resonated nationwide: ‘Vote or resign.’”

Chowdhury emphasized the need for transparency, noting that millions are currently facing difficulties, particularly in Bengal, where 774,000 people are affected. He questioned why the Commission claims it will re-register those who missed voting, yet fails to assist those trapped in legal proceedings.

He further criticized the Commission’s post-election actions, suggesting that the inclusion of names in the voter list after the elections indicates a backdoor acknowledgment of the movement led by Gandhi.

Chowdhury insisted that fair elections can only occur with a fair and free electoral roll, referencing a Supreme Court observation. He posed a critical question: if an election is won or lost by a single vote, and someone is unable to vote due to the Commission’s errors, who will be held accountable? The opposition plans to voice these demands both on the streets and in the legislative assembly.

Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel remarked that a recent CWC meeting, attended by Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, solidified their commitment to fight until electoral fraud ceases. He described Gyanesh Kumar as merely a pawn in a scheme to manipulate votes, asserting that their ultimate goal is to unseat the Prime Minister.

JMM MP Mahua Maji accused the current central government of undermining public trust and appointing corrupt individuals to autonomous institutions. She claimed that the Chief Election Commissioner acted without the consent or knowledge of the other two Election Commission members, taking steps that jeopardized the rights of genuine voters.

Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction) MP Arvind Sawant criticized the Election Commission’s operations, suggesting they have become tools of the ruling party. He expressed concern over widespread corruption in all systems, questioning the judicial system’s role and lamenting the erosion of fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
