
New Delhi, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : Opposition leaders from the INDIA alliance ramped up their protests against the Election Commission of India (ECI) in New Delhi on October 6. They attempted to forcibly open the gates of the Akashvani Bhawan while demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Carrying the national flag and banners that read “Save Democracy,” the opposition members marched from Parliament to the Election Commission headquarters. As they advanced, they chanted slogans against the Chief Election Commissioner, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
In response to the protests, Delhi police and other security forces were put on high alert. Barricades were erected outside the Election Commission office to prevent any disruptions.
Prominent Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other opposition figures were briefly detained after being blocked from proceeding to the Election Commission office but were later released.
Rahul Gandhi faced multiple barricades while trying to reach the Election Commission headquarters. He climbed one of the barricades and waved a national flag, receiving support from gathered leaders and activists of the INDIA alliance.
Authorities instructed security forces to remain fully prepared to handle any situation. Measures were implemented to maintain law and order and control the crowd.
Officials stated, “The police aim to uphold peace and order during the protests and prevent any untoward incidents.”
Section 163 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was enforced around Jantar Mantar and nearby areas, which may restrict certain activities and gatherings. The administration urged the public to comply with the established regulations and cooperate with security measures.
Earlier, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge affirmed that the opposition would continue its struggle to “save democracy,” emphasizing the INDIA alliance’s determination to persist with their protests.
