Opposition Leaders Demand Resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar After India Block Meeting

New Delhi, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : The leaders of opposition parties have made it clear that they will not back down until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resigns. This declaration came after a significant meeting of the India Block held in New Delhi on September 30, 2026.

During the meeting, discussions centered around the Special Intensive Review (SIR), electronic voting machines (EVMs), and the ongoing controversies surrounding Kumar. Congress MP K.C. Venugopal accused the Election Commission of operating in favor of the central government and the BJP.

Deepankar Bhattacharya, General Secretary of CPI (ML), stated that Gyanesh Kumar is currently a focal point of national conversation. He emphasized that the demand for Kumar’s removal or resignation is pressing. Bhattacharya also noted plans to challenge the 2023 Act, which he claims facilitated Kumar’s appointment, in the Supreme Court.

The opposition plans to escalate their campaign into a public movement, running from October 2 to October 8. On October 6, opposition MPs will visit the Election Commission and meet with the President, while also organizing major rallies across the country. Bhattacharya asserted that the legal proceedings against Kumar should commence with his resignation.

M.A. Baby, General Secretary of CPI (M), highlighted the need to engage not only political parties but also social movements, civil society, intellectuals, and NGOs in their efforts.

Congress MP Jose K. Mani raised concerns about manipulations in Form-6, claiming that evidence supports these allegations. He stated that the demand for accountability is not just from the opposition but is a call from the Indian populace.

Congress MP Nasir Hussain insisted that the protests will continue until Kumar resigns and the forces behind him are identified and held accountable.

Pawan Khera, another Congress leader, questioned the Election Commission’s justification regarding Form-6, pointing out that changes made after the Supreme Court’s approval were concealed from the court.

Sukhdev Bhagat, a Congress MP, recalled that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 to empower young voters. He criticized the current complexities surrounding Form-6 that hinder voter registration.

Nana Patole, a Congress leader, supported the issues raised during the India Block meeting, asserting that the Election Commission is acting in the BJP’s interest and collaborating with the government to undermine democracy.
