New Delhi, March 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the Noida International Airport on Saturday. This new airport is set to enhance connectivity in the Delhi-NCR region, making travel easier and boosting the state’s economy.
Developed and operated by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, this major infrastructure project has an investment of approximately ₹11,200 crores. Both the central and state governments have participated in its development.
Located near the Yamuna Expressway, this airport serves as the second civil airport in the National Capital Region (NCR) and is recognized as one of India’s largest greenfield airport projects.
In March 2026, the airport received an aerodrome license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), permitting ‘all-weather operations’. This means it is equipped with modern navigation systems, runway lighting, and air traffic control systems, allowing aircraft to operate smoothly even in low visibility conditions.
The initial capacity of the airport is set to accommodate 12 million passengers annually, with plans to expand this to 70 million in the future.
The first phase includes a 3,900-meter runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft. An Instrument Landing System (ILS) has been installed at both ends of the runway, enabling planes to land from any direction based on wind conditions.
Additionally, a modern lighting system has been integrated to ensure smooth operations during nighttime and adverse weather.
Notably, this airport will be the first in the country to feature in-house maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities. It will also have substantial cargo handling capacity, managing over 250,000 metric tons of goods annually.
The Noida International Airport is being developed as a major international gateway for the NCR, enhancing connectivity between India and the world while strengthening the country’s aviation sector.
Furthermore, it is being designed as a multi-modal transport hub, improving coordination between road, rail, metro, and other transport services, thereby enhancing convenience for both passengers and freight.
With the expressway, the most metro-operated state, the first rapid rail service, and the first inland waterway, Uttar Pradesh is now proud to host the Noida International Airport, making it a significant hub for both international and domestic air travel.
