New Delhi, August 7: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated stringent measures against child sexual abuse content on the social media platform Instagram. NHRC member Priyank Kanungo revealed that over 50 cases related to this issue have emerged in the past week. Notices have been issued to police chiefs in eight states, including Punjab, Delhi, Telangana, and Maharashtra, directing them to file FIRs and take appropriate action.
In an interview, Kanungo stated that more than 50 cases have been reported in the last seven days, involving incidents of rape against children, the creation of sexual abuse videos, and their subsequent upload on Instagram.
“This is a serious crime. We have issued notices to Instagram, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and the police chiefs of eight different states, instructing them to file FIRs and take necessary actions,” he said.
Kanungo also urged citizens not to remain silent about such cases. “If you come across any child sexual abuse material, please report it to the nearest police station. If the police do not take action, contact the commission,” he added.
He expressed hope that as the public becomes more vigilant in reporting these heinous acts on social media platforms, more cases will come to light, allowing for proper action against the offenders.
The NHRC has also sent a notice directly to Meta, emphasizing that the platform must understand its responsibilities and remove illegal content promptly under India’s IT regulations. Additionally, the Ministry of Electronics and IT has been informed to enhance monitoring at the central level.
