New Zealands Historic 317-Run Partnership Sets Strong Foundation Against England

Nottingham, June 25: In a remarkable display of skill, New Zealand’s captain Tom Latham and Devon Conway forged a historic 317-run opening partnership on the first day of the third Test match against England at Trent Bridge. Thanks to their outstanding performance, New Zealand ended the day at 361 runs for the loss of 4 wickets.

Winning the toss and opting to bat, the New Zealand team received a stellar start from Latham and Conway. The duo amassed their impressive partnership over 72.1 overs.

This partnership marks the third-largest opening stand in Test history for New Zealand. Previously, in December 2025, the same pair had set a record of 323 runs against the West Indies. The all-time record for New Zealand is held by Glenn Turner and Travis Jarvis, who scored 387 runs against the West Indies in April 1972.

During this match in Nottingham, Tom Latham scored 151 runs off 214 balls, hitting 15 fours before being dismissed. Just one ball into the next over, the team lost Devon Conway, who made 157 runs off 224 balls, including 3 sixes and 22 fours.

New Zealand faced their second setback at a score of 319, after which Henry Nicholls and Rachin Ravindra added 42 runs for the third wicket in 65 balls. Rachin managed only 7 runs from 22 balls with one four. The team lost Nicholls (36) after 84.1 overs, leading to the end of the day’s play. For England, Gus Atkinson, Jofra Archer, captain Ben Stokes, and Joe Root each took one wicket.

The host nation England had previously won the first match of the Test series at Lord’s by an innings and 115 runs. However, New Zealand bounced back to win the second match by 253 runs, leveling the series at 1-1. The third and final match now becomes a decider, with the winning team claiming the series.
