New Delhi, April 25: Tensions have escalated along the Nepal-India border recently. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Balendra Shah, new customs duties on goods entering Nepal from India have sparked significant public outrage. Large-scale protests against the Shah government are currently taking place in Nepal. In this context, a group of Nepalese journalists met with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared details on social media platform X, stating, “A group of Nepalese journalists engaged in discussions with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. The Foreign Secretary informed the group about the significant progress in various partnerships between India and Nepal and the positive outlook for the future.”
Since Prime Minister Shah’s recent decision, residents in border areas have faced increased difficulties. Recent images have surfaced showing customs checks on goods at the Nepal-India border.
In response, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted, “We have received reports from Nepalese authorities regarding the implementation of a current regulation. This regulation imposes customs duties on travelers crossing the border if they carry goods worth more than 100 Nepalese rupees purchased in India. We understand that the Nepalese government has taken this step primarily to curb informal trade and smuggling.”
Additionally, the Foreign Secretary mentioned that a statement from a senior Nepalese official indicated that individuals carrying household items for personal use would not be stopped.
The decision by the Balendra Shah government has ignited intense public anger. According to The Sunday Guardian, this controversy is not solely about one decision; it is fueled by economic policies, governance concerns, and allegations of corruption.
Particularly regarding customs duties, residents in border areas of Nepal rely heavily on the Indian market for essential items such as food, household goods, medicines, and clothing. Consequently, these customs duties have adversely affected their finances.
