New Delhi, August 11: The Lok Sabha passed the National Cooperative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, by voice vote on Tuesday, despite loud protests from opposition members.
Cooperation Minister Murleedhar Mohol introduced the bill on behalf of Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah. The bill aims to amend the National Cooperative Development Corporation Act of 1962, facilitating a faster and more flexible funding process for cooperative societies.
The legislation seeks to expand the role of the NCDC, a statutory body under the Ministry of Cooperation, which finances and promotes cooperative societies to support the cooperative sector across the country.
Chairman Krishna Prasad Teneti urged opposition members to allow the house to function smoothly. However, the protests continued.
Following this, the bill was passed by voice vote, and the house was adjourned for the day.
In a similar vein, the Kerala (Name Change) Bill, 2026, was also passed by voice vote amidst ongoing uproar in the Lok Sabha. This bill proposes to rename the state of Kerala to ‘Keralam.’ Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai presented the bill while opposition members shouted demands for Amit Shah’s presence and statements regarding police action against NEET protesters on July 20.
Nityanand Rai and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the opposition for not allowing discussions on the name change bill. When the uproar did not cease, the bill was passed without any debate.
