Naxalite IED Blast Injures Officer During Anti-Insurgency Operation in Jharkhand

Ranchi, March 1: A significant incident occurred in the dense forests of Saranda, West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand, during an anti-Naxalite operation on Sunday. An officer from the 209 Cobra Battalion was critically injured due to an IED explosion set off by Naxalites during a search operation.

The security forces were conducting a search in the thick jungles when the IED detonated. The injured officer, Assistant Commandant Ajay Malik, was airlifted to Ranchi for urgent medical treatment. Following the explosion, Naxalites opened fire indiscriminately on the security personnel.

In response, the security forces took defensive positions and cordoned off the entire area. The sounds of gunfire were heard in nearby villages, creating an atmosphere of fear among local residents. Security agencies dispatched additional forces to the site, and a thorough search operation is currently underway.

Amit Renu, the Superintendent of Police for West Singhbhum, stated that the operation is ongoing and that the situation is being monitored closely. Sources indicate that security forces have surrounded a large group of Naxalites, with reports of several Naxalites being injured or killed in the encounter, though this has not been officially confirmed.

According to police officials, intelligence regarding Naxalite presence in the Saranda forest area prompted the joint team of the 209 Cobra Battalion and district police to initiate the search operation. While navigating through the challenging terrain, a pressure IED planted underground exploded unexpectedly, severely injuring Assistant Commandant Ajay Malik. Senior officials and police headquarters were promptly informed, and the injured officer was safely evacuated for initial treatment.

Just a day prior, the Superintendent of Police had appealed for Naxalites in the Manoharpur area to surrender. Currently, a high alert has been declared across the Saranda region, and operations have been intensified.
