Narayani Shila: A Sacred Site for Ancestor Worship in Haridwar
Narayani Shila in Haridwar is renowned for ancestor rites, attracting thousands during Pitru Paksha for spiritual liberation.

Haridwar, September 24 (Daily Kiran) : Haridwar, known as a city of pilgrimage and liberation, is home to Narayani Shila, a revered rock believed to be a gateway to the liberation of ancestors. Situated along the banks of the Ganges, this ancient site is famous across India for performing rituals such as pind daan, tarpan, and shraddha. After Gaya, it is considered the foremost location for ancestor rites, drawing thousands of devotees from across the country and abroad, especially during the Pitru Paksha period.
The Narayani Shila temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. According to religious beliefs and texts like the Skanda Purana, this rock is regarded as the heart of Lord Vishnu’s deity. It is believed that prayers offered here reach Lord Vishnu directly, granting liberation to the ancestors of those who perform the rituals.
The tales of Gaya Sur, mentioned in the Vayu Purana and Skanda Purana, add to the site’s significance. According to legend, Gaya Sur sought advice from Sage Narada on how to atone for his sins. Narada suggested that liberation could be achieved through severe penance or by engaging in battle with the divine. In his arrogance, Gaya Sur attempted to carry away the divine lotus seat of Lord Vishnu after being thwarted by the closed temple doors at Badri Dham.
A fierce battle ensued when Lord Vishnu intervened at the Kesav Lochan Tirth. During the conflict, Lord Vishnu struck with his mace, while Gaya Sur used the lotus seat as a shield. The blow shattered the lotus seat into three pieces: one fell in Haridwar, where the Narayani Shila temple now stands; the second landed at Brahmakapal in Badri Nath; and the third fell in Gaya.
As a result, Narayani Shila becomes a focal point during the Pitru Paksha, attracting devotees who come to honor and pray for the peace of their ancestors. For the faithful, it is a sacred site where they can reflect on their lineage and seek blessings for their forebears.
