Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett has set a new NFL single-season sack record. Garrett achieved this milestone during Week 18 by sacking Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, marking his 23rd sack of the season.
With this achievement, Garrett now stands alone as the league’s all-time single-season sack leader, surpassing the previous record of 22.5 sacks held jointly by former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan and Pittsburgh Steelers pass rusher T.J. Watt.
Last season, Garrett became the youngest player to reach 100 career sacks, accomplishing the feat just before his 29th birthday and tying Hall of Famers Bruce Smith and Lawrence Taylor as the fourth fastest to reach that milestone in 115 games. Since entering the NFL as the first overall pick in 2017, Garrett has consistently dominated on the field, recording double-digit sacks in eight of his first nine seasons.
Despite his record-breaking performances, Garrett’s frustration with the Browns has been evident. The team’s 3-9 record this season has left them out of playoff contention, making Garrett’s individual achievements the main highlight for fans. Earlier this season, even after Garrett recorded five sacks in a single game, the Browns suffered a heavy 32-13 loss to New England.
Garrett recently signed a four-year contract extension worth $160 million, including $123.5 million guaranteed. Over the past five years, he has consistently recorded at least 14 sacks each season. In 2023, he earned the Defensive Player of the Year award and was named first-team All-Pro for the third time. He also led the league in tackles for loss, with 22 last season and already 26 this season, leading the NFL once again.
Reflecting on his milestone of 100 career sacks, Garrett said, “Didn’t know about all that. That’s great company to be with. Definitely one of the guys I looked up to, as an athlete, as a football player coming up along my way, and still watch clips and watch his tenacity against the edge and all that.”
