Mumbai, March 28: Mumbai’s Kaf Parade police have arrested a suspect involved in a cyber fraud case targeting a judge from the Bombay High Court. According to police reports, the arrest was made in connection with a planned credit card rewards points scam, resulting in a loss of approximately ₹6.02 lakh.
The accused has been identified as Mazhar Alam Israel Miyan, a resident of Jamtara in Jharkhand. The Kaf Parade police collaborated with the Jamtara Cyber Cell and Karmatand police for his apprehension. Investigators revealed that Miyan is not a minor criminal; he is allegedly linked to at least 36 cases across 10 states.
The incident began on February 28 when the judge attempted to redeem his credit card reward points by contacting the bank’s customer care. Due to a busy official helpline, he resorted to the internet, which turned out to be costly. The number he found was a fake helpline set up by cybercriminals.
Police explained that when individuals dial such numbers, they receive an APK file from the fraudsters. After calling the number, the judge was sent a WhatsApp link to download an 18MB application. When the file failed to open on his iPhone, the scammers, posing as customer service representatives, advised him to use an Android device instead.
Trusting their instructions, he inserted his SIM card into his house help’s Android phone and downloaded the application. As soon as he entered his credit card details to redeem the points, ₹6 lakh was transferred from his account.
Upon realizing the fraud, the judge promptly filed a complaint with the Mumbai police. The police registered a case and initiated an investigation, leading to the suspect’s arrest after nearly 10 days of diligent effort.
