MSRTC Cancels Proposed 15% Fare Hike for Diwali Travelers
MSRTC has officially canceled its proposed 15% fare hike for Diwali, providing relief to millions of travelers in Maharashtra.

Mumbai, October 15 (Daily Kiran) : The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has delivered significant relief to millions of travelers ahead of the Diwali festive season by officially canceling a proposed 15% fare increase. This decision, announced on October 15, comes as a response to the economic pressures faced by citizens.
Typically, the transport department implements temporary fare hikes during busy periods like Diwali to meet operational demands. Recently, a proposal to increase fares between November 1 and November 15 was submitted to Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik. However, considering the financial strain on the public, Minister Sarnaik rejected the proposal.
He highlighted the struggles faced by drought-affected farmers, families dealing with inflation, and the working class, questioning why additional financial burdens should be placed on the public during tough times. “Common citizens are already facing significant economic pressure due to inflation and drought. Why should we add to their burden with increased fares?” Sarnaik stated.
The minister emphasized that while MSRTC must explore alternative options to address its financial losses, the administration has a duty to provide relief to the public. The iconic red buses, known as ‘Laalpari’, serve as a vital transportation link for rural Maharashtra, connecting farmers, daily wage workers, students, office-goers, and senior citizens.
Sarnaik reassured the public that understanding their difficulties and providing relief is a priority for the state government. He noted that fare hikes during festive times would place an undue financial strain on travelers already grappling with rising costs. “The state government is sensitive to the needs of the people. In times of crisis, we will not abandon farmers and the common public,” he affirmed.
He further explained that while financial management is essential, it is equally crucial to acknowledge the struggles of people in their daily lives. “We must find alternative solutions to address the financial challenges faced by MSRTC without directly passing the burden onto passengers,” he said.
Sarnaik made it clear that he has firmly rejected the proposed fare increase, prioritizing the welfare of travelers. Earlier this year, MSRTC had implemented a 13.56% fare increase in July to cope with rising operational costs. Additionally, a proposal for a 30% fare hike during the recent Ganesh festival was withdrawn following strong opposition from passengers, particularly those from the Konkan region.
With this latest decision, daily commuters and those traveling home for Diwali can now look forward to their journeys without the worry of increased ticket prices.
