Chennai, August 5: MK Stalin, the leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has labeled the TVK government’s inaugural budget as “disappointing.” He stated that the budget lacks innovative thinking and fails to present a visionary plan for the state’s future. Stalin accused the government of ignoring major promises made during the elections.
After the revised budget estimates for 2026-27 were presented in the assembly, Stalin expressed his disappointment on social media, noting that the public had high hopes for the new government’s first budget, which ultimately fell short.
He remarked, “People expected a groundbreaking budget, but it has proven to be completely ineffective. It is merely a remake of the DMK government’s budget.” Stalin alleged that the TVK government attempted to repackage DMK initiatives under new names.
The DMK leader pointed out that the budget does not address critical issues such as farmers’ problems, electricity billing, and rising inflation.
He also questioned the absence of references to several significant promises made by the TVK during the assembly elections. Stalin stated, “The budget is silent on promises like ₹2,500 for women, ₹4,000 for unemployed youth, six free LPG cylinders, and complete waiver of crop loans.”
Stalin criticized the budget for lacking a clear framework for the state’s long-term development and accused the government of failing to convert its electoral promises into financial commitments.
Opposition leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Udayanidhi Stalin also criticized the budget, claiming that many of the DMK’s initiatives were merely presented with new names as if they were new schemes.
Speaking to reporters after the budget was presented at the secretariat, Udayanidhi stated that the government had attempted to present existing schemes in a new light instead of introducing new initiatives. He mentioned that the DMK would conduct a thorough review of the budget proposals and raise the issue of the government’s unfulfilled electoral promises in the assembly.
Udayanidhi also referenced the police’s detention of actress Trisha during a protest in Thanjavur, alleging that the police action was aimed at preventing the opposition from effectively voicing concerns against the government before the budget session.
The DMK’s response comes immediately after the TVK government unveiled its first budget. A sharp political debate is anticipated in the state regarding budget priorities, welfare schemes, and development issues.
