Chennai, August 5: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay honored athletes from the state who won medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026. The ceremony took place at the Secretariat on Wednesday, where the CM presented checks totaling ₹80 lakh to medalists Raja Muthupandi, Praveen Chitrawel, and Selva Prabhu.
To establish Tamil Nadu as India’s leading state in sports, the government is implementing several initiatives. These include providing world-class training, cash rewards, and enhancing the sports infrastructure to empower state athletes for national and international competitions.
As part of his commitment, the Chief Minister awarded ₹30 lakh to Raja Muthupandi, who secured a silver medal in the men’s 65 kg weightlifting event held in Glasgow, Scotland.
Praveen Chitrawel, who won a silver medal in the men’s triple jump event, received ₹30 lakh. His father, S. Chitrawel, was also honored. Praveen is a former trainee at the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) hostel and currently works at Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited under the sports quota.
Selva Prabhu from Madurai received a check for ₹20 lakh after winning a bronze medal in the men’s triple jump event. He is also a former SDAT hostel trainee.
The Chief Minister congratulated the athletes for their remarkable achievements.
The event was attended by Minister for Public Works and Sports Development Aadhav Arjun, Secretary of Youth Welfare and Sports Development Sandeep Nanduri, and Member Secretary of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu J. Meghnath Reddy.
India’s performance at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow was outstanding, with the country finishing fourth in the medal tally, securing a total of 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze.
