Kolkata, August 5: This year, Kolkata’s Independence Day celebrations will feature floats highlighting various welfare schemes from both the central and West Bengal governments. Initiatives such as the Annapurna Scheme, the Developed India-Gi Ram Ji Scheme, the PM Housing Scheme, and free bus travel for women will be prominently displayed.
A government official announced on Wednesday that eleven floats will be showcased on Red Road during the Independence Day parade on August 15. Additionally, a float will honor the contributions of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the founder of the Janata Party.
Since the BJP government took charge in the state, several new projects and welfare schemes have been launched. This year’s Independence Day program will highlight all of these initiatives.
Ten departments, including Public Works, Health, Transport, Electricity, and Panchayat, will present floats based on their respective schemes.
During the tenure of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, well-decorated floats also showcased various welfare schemes during the Independence Day parade. However, only three or four floats were displayed at that time. This year, the number has been increased.
According to state government sources, the floats will also feature the central government‘s welfare schemes and the life and contributions of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.
This will be the first Independence Day event since the BJP formed the government in the state. Furthermore, awareness messages related to various services of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and road safety will also be presented.
The main event will commence at 10:30 AM on August 15 at Red Road in central Kolkata. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will hoist the national flag, followed by a parade, float displays, and cultural programs.
Arrangements have also been made for flower petals to be showered from helicopters. The entire program is expected to last approximately one hour. In light of recent concerns over militant attacks, security measures are being heightened around Independence Day.
According to government sources, a multi-layered security cordon, surveillance systems, and adequate police forces will be deployed in and around Red Road.
