Visakhapatnam: New Zealand secured a 50-run victory over India in the fourth T20 match of the series at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, opening their winning account in the series. Kiwi captain Mitchell Santner revealed that the team was well aware that even a target of 200 runs would not be safe against India.
Batting first, New Zealand posted a formidable total of 215 runs for 7 wickets. In response, India was bowled out for 165 runs in 18.4 overs.
After the match, Santner said, “It was a fantastic contest. The way we started in the powerplay was similar to how India usually plays against us. We set a good score, but we knew that even 200 runs were not safe against India.”
He added, “After the previous match, it was important that our batsmen did not feel pressured by scoring 150–160 runs and playing defensively. We had to stay aggressive because that is how we can win matches. The way our batsmen attacked the bowlers in the powerplay was excellent and laid a strong foundation. Although we lost a few wickets in the middle overs, the good start limited the damage. In the end, Daryl Mitchell and Jakari Flowers gave a brilliant finish, which was positive for us.”
With the T20 World Cup scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka starting February 7, this series holds significant importance as preparation for both teams. Santner said, “The T20 World Cup 2026 begins on February 7. Since the tournament is being hosted by India and Sri Lanka, we view this tour as an essential preparation. Playing in India and against India is the best way to prepare. Some players are returning for the upcoming matches, which is good. Our current focus is on clarifying our plans and defining player roles.”
Regarding the pitch, Santner noted, “The pitch seemed flat at the start with not much spin. There was a mix of seam and spin on slower balls. Partnerships are crucial in such conditions. If wickets fall early, it becomes easier for the spinners in the later overs.”
