Miami Open: Zverev and Shevchenko Secure Victories in Opening Matches

Miami, March 22: The Miami Open kicked off with a strong performance from Alexander Zverev, a semi-finalist at Indian Wells. The German player began his campaign with a decisive victory over wildcard Martin Damm, winning 6-2, 6-4 on Sunday.

This win further solidified Zverev’s impressive record at the ATP Masters 1000 level, bringing his total victories to 103. It also enhanced his dominance against players ranked outside the top 100 and maintained his winning streak against left-handed opponents in recent seasons.

Zverev is set to face experienced player Marin Cilic next. The Croatian secured his spot by defeating Brandon Nakashima in a tough three-set match, saving a match point along the way.

Meanwhile, Alexander Shevchenko made a remarkable comeback, knocking out fan-favorite Ben Shelton. The third-seeded Zverev advanced comfortably to the third round of the Miami Open.

Shevchenko, after trailing a set, rallied to win 6-7(3), 7-6(3), 6-3 in a late-night second-round match, sending the American player home early from one of Florida’s biggest tournaments.

This victory marked Shevchenko’s third career win against a top 10 opponent, propelling him to the third round of an ATP Masters 1000 event for the fourth time.

The Kazakh player nearly lost the second set but elevated his game in the tiebreak to force a decisive set. He played aggressively in the third set, quickly securing a crucial break to apply pressure on Shelton.

Despite a strong start with his serve, Shelton faltered later in the match as Shevchenko dominated the rallies. Remaining calm under pressure, Shevchenko dropped just one point in his last two service games, sealing a fantastic victory.
