Mehbooba Mufti Criticizes CM Omar Abdullah Over Delayed Condemnation of Iran Attacks

Srinagar, March 27: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the Israeli attacks on Iran on Friday. This prompted a sharp response from Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP). She expressed disappointment that it took the Chief Minister a whole month to clearly condemn the attacks on Iran by Israel.

On Friday, Mehbooba Mufti took to the social media platform ‘X’ to voice her concerns. She wrote, “It is disheartening that our Chief Minister, the only Muslim Chief Minister of India’s sole Muslim-majority state, took a full month to clearly condemn the Israeli attacks on Iran. Even the Punjab Assembly acted swiftly, passing a resolution to express solidarity with Iran. Yet, the Jammu and Kashmir government showed no urgency or genuine concern, limiting its responses to mere statements and speeches instead of taking a principled stance.”

Earlier on the same day, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly regarding the conflict in Iran, calling for peace and immediate diplomatic intervention. He stated that an unjust and illegal war has been imposed on Iran, and he doubted anyone would support it.

Omar Abdullah said, “The brutal killing of innocent people, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei and his many associates and relatives, deserves condemnation. Unfortunately, the violence did not stop there. The ruthless killing of innocent children in schools is an event rarely seen in history.”

He questioned the purpose of the war, stating that it remains unclear. “Listening to the U.S. President, even he seems unaware of why this war has been imposed on Iran,” he added.

Notably, following the Israeli attacks that resulted in the death of Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, there have been ongoing protests in Jammu and Kashmir. Demonstrations condemning the Israeli strikes have taken place in several areas, including Srinagar.
