Meghalaya Unveils Its First Sports Science Center in Shillong

Meghalayas Chief Minister inaugurates the states first high-performance sports science center aimed at enhancing athlete training and rehabilitation.

Shillong, October 16 (Daily Kiran) : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the state’s first High-Performance Sports Science Center in Shillong on October 16. This facility aims to strengthen scientific training, improve athlete performance, and provide specialized services for injury prevention and rehabilitation.

The center has been established in collaboration with Abhinav Futuristics Private Limited (AFL), which operates under the guidance of India’s first individual Olympic gold medalist, Abhinav Bindra.

This initiative is part of the state government’s broader effort to create a comprehensive sports ecosystem, from identifying grassroots talent to supporting elite-level competitions. The collaboration began following a proposal made by AFL to state officials during the signing of the Olympic Values Education Program (OVEP).

The center offers a range of services, including performance analytics, physical assessments, specialized conditioning, and rehabilitation, all under one roof. Facilities for biometric and biomechanical evaluations, motion analysis, and strength testing are available, enabling athletes and coaches to assess performance, identify weaknesses, and develop tailored training programs.

In addition to performance enhancement, the center will assist athletes in avoiding, managing, and recovering from sports-related injuries through specialized conditioning and rehabilitation support.

According to the state government’s plan, the center will benefit athletes at all levels, whether they are emerging talents from grassroots sports development programs or elite athletes preparing for state, national, and international competitions.

In a post on the social media platform X, Sangma emphasized the government’s vision of building a robust sports ecosystem that includes talent identification at the grassroots level and elite performance support. He stated, “Tomorrow’s champions are built on the foundation laid today.”
