Man Dies in Police Custody in Navi Mumbai; Investigation Underway

Navi Mumbai, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : A 38-year-old man has died while in police custody in Navi Mumbai, raising concerns and prompting an investigation. The deceased has been identified as Sanjay Kantu Yadav.

Yadav was arrested by the Navi Mumbai International Airport police in connection with a case. He resided in Ananta Tower, located in Ulwe Sector 6, and was originally from Varanasi district in Uttar Pradesh. Following his arrest, a court ordered him to be held in police custody.

On October 8, Yadav was placed in a lock-up at the NRI Sagari police station in Navi Mumbai. During his detention, staff noticed that he was clenching his fists and experiencing stiffness in his limbs. As his condition deteriorated, police officers rushed him to Meenatai Thackeray Hospital in Nerul, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Authorities reported that Yadav had undergone a medical examination at Panvel Rural Hospital prior to his arrest. During his court appearance, he did not complain of any health issues. Even during a medical check-up on October 6, he did not indicate any illness or health concerns.

Senior police officials have been informed about the incident. A panchnama is being conducted with videography in the presence of the first-class judicial magistrate of Belapur, witnesses, and the deceased’s family.

The body has been sent to JJ Hospital in Mumbai for a post-mortem examination. The police have stated that further legal actions are ongoing. This incident is not the first of its kind in Maharashtra; on September 22, the state’s Crime Investigation Department was investigating the death of a 35-year-old man who died while in custody of the Railway Protection Force at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

The earlier victim, Imran Sheikh, had come to Mumbai from Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, in search of work. According to Central Railway officials, Sheikh had inquired about trains to Khandwa at CSMT on September 20, appearing agitated and claiming that people were trying to harm him. Following this, he allegedly became aggressive and attacked RPF sub-inspector Aniket, injuring himself in the process.
