Fugitive Arrested in Puducherry After 14 Years on the Run for Counterfeit Currency

Puducherry, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended a fugitive involved in counterfeit Indian currency cases after he had been on the run for nearly 14 years. The arrest occurred on Friday in Puducherry, where the suspect had previously evaded capture after being released on bail.

Mohammad Ismail Sheikh was accused of using counterfeit ₹1,000 notes in transactions. He was initially caught at a fruit shop in Puducherry while attempting to use fake notes valued at ₹19,000. Following his arrest on January 18, 2012, he was released on bail on July 2, 2012.

After his release, Sheikh failed to appear in court and deliberately avoided legal proceedings, leading to his long-term evasion. A CBI team, utilizing technical leads and persistent efforts, finally tracked him down and made the arrest.

In a statement, the CBI emphasized its commitment to apprehending criminals involved in the circulation of counterfeit currency to protect the nation’s economic integrity.

In a separate operation, the CBI uncovered a network involved in fraudulent activities related to banking job examinations. This operation led to the arrest of four key individuals, including a CGST inspector, who compromised the integrity of the examination process.

The CBI launched this investigation based on a complaint from the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) and conducted simultaneous raids across multiple states, revealing the extent of the fraud.
