Man Arrested for Murdering Disabled Son in Bardhaman

Kolkata, March 7: A man has been arrested in Bardhaman district of West Bengal for allegedly strangling his disabled son and burying the body. Police confirmed the arrest.

The accused, identified as Sonalal Mandal, was apprehended on Friday night in the Memari area of Bardhaman. Following the incident, the local community is in shock.

According to police reports, his son Surya was born blind and had limited mobility. The family struggled significantly with his care due to his condition.

Shortly after Surya’s birth, his mother left the family. He then lived with his grandmother until her passing, after which his care fell to his father, Sonalal. It was around this time that Sonalal began to view his son as a burden.

Local residents noted that the accused had previously attempted to send his son to an orphanage. When that plan failed, he devised a plan to murder the child.

A senior police officer revealed that on Wednesday, Sonalal took his son to the banks of Kaladighi Lake in Memari. There, he strangled Surya and buried the body.

On Thursday morning, rising water levels in the lake exposed the child’s body. Police arrived at the scene and sent the remains for post-mortem examination at Bardhaman Medical College.

During the investigation, police detained Sonalal for questioning, during which he confessed to the murder. He has since been formally arrested, and a case has been registered against him. The investigation is ongoing.
