Kolkata, March 3: The political atmosphere in West Bengal has intensified over the voter list in Bhawanipur, the constituency represented by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Reports indicate that more names may be removed from the voter list, raising concerns among opposition parties. They view this as a potential threat to the Chief Minister’s position, while Banerjee remains confident about her electoral prospects.
Sources reveal that voters identified with “logical discrepancies” in their documents have been referred for judicial scrutiny. Following this process, further name removals are anticipated.
According to data from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office in West Bengal, 14,154 cases have been sent for judicial investigation. Previously, 47,111 names had already been removed from the final voter list for Bhawanipur. If more names are eliminated post-investigation, this number could rise significantly.
The opposition has begun to target the Chief Minister over this issue. Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, stated that the removal of such a large number of voters is alarming for Banerjee. He claims that there may not be enough voters left to secure her victory in the upcoming assembly elections.
Conversely, Mamata Banerjee expressed unwavering confidence, asserting that she will win the election in Bhawanipur, even if only one voter remains. She has leveled serious allegations against the Election Commission, claiming that many legitimate voters’ names have been intentionally removed.
Banerjee suggested that this is part of a conspiracy involving the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing the Election Commission of colluding with the BJP in this endeavor.
