Major Raids on Hotels and Eateries in Gujarat: Over ₹1.4 Lakh Fines and 615 Kg of Food Destroyed

Gandhinagar, April 5: Authorities in Gujarat conducted extensive raids on hundreds of hotels and eateries, resulting in fines exceeding ₹1.4 lakh and the destruction of approximately 615 kilograms of substandard food.

Officials reported that this operation targeted various establishments, including hotels, restaurants, dhabas, and street food stalls, to ensure food safety and transparency, particularly concerning the use of paneer (Indian cottage cheese) and analog paneer. A total of 347 locations were inspected across the state.

Among those fined were hotels in Ahmedabad for failing to provide accurate information. The Surat Municipal Corporation and Rajkot Municipal Corporation imposed fines of ₹52,300 and ₹3,600, respectively.

On April 4, the Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) issued an order mandating all food businesses to clearly indicate whether they are using milk-based paneer or analog paneer made from vegetable fats, starch, or other ingredients.

The order stated, “Products made from other ingredients should not be labeled as ‘paneer’ nor sold as such. Instead, they should be identified as ‘paneer analog’ or ‘analog’.”

Officials emphasized that any attempt to mislead customers or provide false information would be considered a violation of regulations, warranting strict legal action. They reiterated their commitment to protecting consumer interests and ensuring food safety across Gujarat.
