Major General PK Sehgal Critiques USCIRF Report, Calls India Safe for Minorities

New Delhi, March 21: Major General (Retired) PK Sehgal, a former officer of the Indian Army and defense expert, responded sharply to the recent report by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) on Saturday.

In an interview with a news agency, Major General Sehgal labeled the report as a “significant oversight.” He stated, “In reality, India is the only country where the lives of minorities are far better than in Bangladesh. Today, India stands as an example of peace, tranquility, and harmony.”

He pointed to the conditions in neighboring countries, saying, “In Bangladesh, the population of Hindu minorities is continuously declining. Similar situations exist in Pakistan. The U.S. should first examine what happens to Hindu temples and communities in those places and in its own country before focusing on India.”

Sehgal emphasized that India is a living example of diversity, where multiple religions, languages, and cultures coexist and thrive.

Citing the last decade, he claimed, “There has not been a single riot or communal violence in the country over the past ten years.” He advised the USCIRF to conduct a thorough investigation of facts before preparing reports, rather than being influenced by bias. Sehgal asserted that minority communities in India live safe and dignified lives, while discrimination and violence are common in neighboring countries.

This statement follows the release of the USCIRF’s 2026 annual report, which mentioned violence against minorities, discriminatory laws, and vigilantism in 2025. The Indian government has dismissed the report as “biased” and “motivated.”
