Palakkad, February 5: The South Police in Palakkad, Kerala, has made a significant breakthrough by seizing a large cache of explosives. These were being smuggled in a mini truck disguised as watermelons. The operation took place around 9 PM on Wednesday near the Palakkad Government Medical College on the Yakkara Service Road.

The police have detained the truck driver, Senthil Kumar, who is reportedly from Tamil Nadu.

According to police reports, the operation was initiated based on a tip-off received by South Inspector Vipin Kumar. Upon receiving the information, the police increased surveillance in the area and began inspecting suspicious vehicles.

During this process, an attempt was made to stop a mini truck, but the driver refused to halt and sped away. The police pursued the truck and eventually cornered it on the service road.

Upon searching the vehicle, the police were astonished to find over a hundred boxes hidden beneath the watermelons, containing approximately 18,000 gelatin sticks and 4,800 detonators.

Authorities stated that these explosives are highly dangerous and expensive, typically used in mining and stone-crushing operations. A bomb squad was called to the scene to safely handle the explosives.

In preliminary questioning, driver Senthil Kumar revealed that the explosives were brought from Thuppur in the Dhaarapuram area of Tamil Nadu and were intended for delivery to Thrissur district in Kerala. However, police suspect that a larger smuggling network is at play. Intensive questioning of the driver is ongoing to determine the intended recipients and purpose of the explosives.

Police officials noted that this is not the first incident of its kind. Last year, police from Palakkad and Coimbatore jointly seized over 40,000 gelatin sticks and around 5,000 detonators being smuggled from Tamil Nadu to Kerala. Currently, the police are investigating every angle of the case.
