New Delhi, June 5: A significant development has emerged in the investigation of the murder of Debasmita Paul, an assistant professor at Delhi University. According to sources involved in the case, on the day of the murder, June 3, a young man and a woman, both masked and carrying bags, were seen arriving at her residence.
The pair reportedly stayed inside the apartment for about half an hour before leaving. Currently, the police are trying to determine whether their presence was before or after the murder.
Debasmita Paul’s body was discovered on Thursday in a flat located in Satyam Apartments, Vasundhara Enclave, East Delhi. Initial investigations suggest that she was killed on June 3.
Sources indicate that around 3:20 PM on June 3, a young man and woman arrived at the apartment in a private cab. The cab driver remained outside while the duo entered the building with their bags. CCTV footage shows them taking the stairs instead of the lift as they headed towards the flat.
Investigators believe they were inside the flat for approximately half an hour. Witnesses claim that when they exited, their clothing appeared different from when they entered. This has led the police to seriously examine their involvement in the case.
According to media reports, the police have detained the cab driver for questioning and are gathering information related to the trip. They are also collecting CCTV footage and other evidence.
Initial examinations of the crime scene revealed no signs of forced entry, raising suspicions that Debasmita Paul may have known her attackers and allowed them into her home. Investigative agencies are considering this as a possible ‘friendly entry.’
Debasmita was living alone in her sister’s flat after separating from her husband due to marital disputes in 2022. Her husband currently resides in Bengaluru.
The case came to light when her sister, Devrati Paul, decided to visit the flat after receiving no response to multiple phone calls. She found the flat locked from the outside. Upon entering, she discovered Debasmita in a pool of blood and immediately notified the police.
According to the police, the professor suffered severe injuries to her head from a heavy object. Marks of injury were also found on her wrist. A post-mortem is being conducted at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital to determine the exact cause and time of death.
Currently, the police are questioning neighbors, domestic staff, and others connected to the case.
