Charkhi Dadri, May 4: In a show of support for Vinesh Phogat, Dronacharya Award winner and veteran coach Mahavir Singh Phogat has raised serious concerns about the state of wrestling infrastructure and administration in India. He emphasized the need for proper adherence to rules, improved training facilities, and the resolution of conflicts among athletes.
Mahavir Singh stated, “The rules and provisions of the sport must be implemented correctly. Performing well just once a year does not make a significant difference. Even today, athletes lack proper training and adequate facilities. Many are still forced to practice in fields. The biggest issue is the disputes among athletes, whether it’s Vinesh, Sangeeta, or Vijender. Everyone wants to choose their own coach, but it is essential to appoint capable coaches who can genuinely inspire the athletes.”
He added, “There are stadiums and grounds in Delhi and surrounding areas, but it is crucial for athletes to have access to them and train regularly. They should also perform well at the school and college levels. We have participated at the national level multiple times, and our coaches have contributed to the national team. Our stadiums in Bhalgarh and Delhi are providing opportunities for athletes. What is needed is equal access for everyone, and the proper utilization of stadiums and infrastructure being developed by the government.”
Previously, Vinesh Phogat revealed that she is one of six female wrestlers who filed formal complaints of sexual harassment against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Despite the case still being under judicial consideration, Phogat issued a stern warning to the central government and the sports ministry regarding the upcoming National Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda, which is considered Brij Bhushan’s stronghold.
In a video shared on social media, Vinesh mentioned that although the Supreme Court guidelines protect the identity of victims to maintain their dignity, she felt compelled to speak out given the current circumstances. Addressing this issue, Sanjay Singh, president of the Indian Wrestling Federation, assured that the federation is taking full responsibility. He also ruled out any last-minute changes to the tournament venue.
