Maharashtra Governor Celebrates International Yoga Day with Coast Guard Officials

Mumbai, June 21: Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma celebrated International Yoga Day on Sunday at Lok Bhavan in Mumbai, joining senior officials from the Indian Coast Guard for a yoga session.

This year’s event at Lok Bhavan was organized in collaboration with the Indian Coast Guard. Officers, staff, their family members, and officials from Lok Bhavan participated in the program.

Addressing the attendees, the Governor urged all universities in Maharashtra to promote yoga widely and prepare yoga tutors and trainers for the world. He praised the global recognition of yoga, noting that it has traditionally been practiced in homes, ashrams, and specialized institutions. A historic turning point occurred when Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to the United Nations to declare June 21 as International Yoga Day. This initiative received significant international support, leading to a proposal being passed at the UN with the help of a record number of member countries.

Governor Jishnu Dev Varma acknowledged the remarkable contributions of the Indian Coast Guard since its establishment in 1977. Congratulating the force on reaching the milestone of 50 years, he expressed pride in the country’s journey marked by dedication, professionalism, and selfless service.

The Indian Coast Guard has emerged as a crucial pillar of India’s maritime security framework through countless operations and continuous surveillance. Maharashtra has greatly benefited from the Coast Guard’s commitment, given its extensive coastline, busy ports, and strategic maritime interests.

He highlighted the force’s vital role in ensuring safety at sea, protecting fishermen and sailors, preventing illegal activities, and maintaining security along the coastline.

The Governor emphasized that the relentless efforts of Coast Guard personnel, often undertaken in challenging conditions, ensure that India’s seas remain safe, secure, and prosperous.

He noted that the celebration of International Yoga Day reflects the principles of the Indian Coast Guard, where physical fitness, mental strength, and a spirit of service go hand in hand.

Governor Jishnu Dev Varma reiterated his appeal to all universities to promote yoga, stating, “I believe our universities can prepare the best yoga tutors and trainers for the world, contributing significantly to spreading this invaluable Indian tradition globally.”
