Mumbai, March 24: Maharashtra’s Cooperation Minister, Babasaheb Patil, announced on Tuesday that the government will soon release a comprehensive new cooperative policy aimed at enhancing the development of the cooperative sector.
He asserted that the cooperative sector serves as an exemplary model for social and economic transformation.
Minister Patil was responding to a short discussion initiated under Rule 97 by member Praveen Darekar. He informed the assembly that a 15-member committee has been formed to draft the new policy.
Meetings will be held to incorporate suggestions from experts, experienced workers, and the younger generation from various departments, including Mumbai and Nagpur. The policy will prioritize transparency, efficiency, and sustainable development.
Minister Patil emphasized that the cooperative movement is the backbone of the rural economy, with approximately 233,000 active cooperative societies in the state. This network includes top institutions, District Central Cooperative Banks (DCCBs), primary agricultural credit societies, urban banks, sugar factories, and housing societies.
He mentioned that the state government is strengthening this sector through interest subsidies for DCCBs, grants for primary institutions, interest discounts for farmers who regularly repay crop loans, digitization of cooperatives, margin money for sugar factories, and financing for various projects through the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC).
Currently, 128 cooperative and 134 private sugar factories are operational. The Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) regulations ensure the protection of farmers. He stated that the Vasantdada Sugar Institute will provide farmers with modern machinery and direct field guidance to enhance productivity and extend the crushing season.
He further noted that financial assistance is being provided to distressed DCCBs. Additionally, the redevelopment of housing societies has been expedited, improving the grievance redressal mechanism and speeding up the decision-making process.
Minister Patil concluded his address by stating that the cooperative movement will play a crucial role in job creation in the future. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening sectors like dairy production and fisheries through cooperatives, ensuring that this movement remains a robust pillar of the state’s development.
