Maharashtra Government Commits to Modern Healthcare for All: CM Fadnavis

Mumbai, March 27: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the second phase redevelopment of Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital in Sion on Friday. He emphasized that the state government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are dedicated to providing free, high-quality, and modern healthcare to every citizen of Mumbai.

The Chief Minister announced that the hospital’s capacity will increase from 1,900 to 3,286 beds. The estimated cost of this project is ₹2,500 crores, which includes the construction of a new main building, a dedicated wing for cancer treatment, emergency services, and an advanced outpatient department (OPD). The construction is expected to be completed by 2030.

Fadnavis reflected on the hospital’s journey, which began in 1947 as a small facility with just 60 beds and has now evolved into a major medical institution.

He noted that Sion Hospital already houses one of Asia’s largest trauma care centers, a human milk bank, and a specialized skin bank for burn victims. He stated, “Given the increasing number of patients, modernization was essential.”

The ₹2,500 crore project will feature a 15-story building with a capacity of 2,200 beds, a 13-story cancer care facility with 200 beds, and a 14-story emergency services building with 600 beds.

Additionally, a 25-story tower will be constructed for doctors and nursing staff, which will include over 40 operating theaters and a 14-story OPD building capable of treating 16,000 patients daily.

Advanced diagnostic equipment will also be installed, including MRI, CT scans, PET scans, and a pneumatic tube system for rapid sample transport.

Fadnavis highlighted that under the Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, citizens receive free treatment for approximately 2,400 diseases, with financial assistance of up to ₹5 lakh. For nine specific critical illnesses, support of up to ₹22 lakh is provided.

He mentioned that technology will play a crucial role in the future of healthcare, and this hospital will extensively utilize modern technology.

BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde described this redevelopment as the beginning of a new era. She stated, “Known as the ‘Infra Man,’ Devendra Fadnavis has ensured that the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund becomes a reliable right for millions of patients.”

She noted that the BMC is the only organization in the country that provides primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare services under one roof, treating over 7.5 million outpatients annually. The goal of “One City, One Health System” is to ensure smooth coordination across all municipal hospitals.

Meanwhile, CM Fadnavis also inaugurated e-buggy ambulances for patient transport within the hospital premises.
