Mumbai, August 4: The Maharashtra government has extended the fishing ban in coastal areas until August 15, considering the breeding season of marine fish. This decision was communicated by Maharashtra’s Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane during a phone call with Goa’s Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant.
Nitesh Rane posted on the social media platform X, informing that he discussed the fishing ban imposed by Maharashtra’s fisheries department with Chief Minister Sawant. He requested the Goa government to ensure that fishermen from Goa do not enter Maharashtra’s marine areas for fishing during this period.
Minister Nitesh Rane stated that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant responded positively and assured full cooperation. He also expressed gratitude to Sawant for the support.
It is noteworthy that the Maharashtra government has extended the fishing ban in coastal areas until August 15. This includes a prohibition on commercial and mechanized fishing within 12 nautical miles, approximately 24 kilometers, from the state’s coastline. This ban goes beyond the standard restrictions that ended on July 31, as mandated by the central government.
However, traditional fishermen are exempt from this ban. Authorized small and non-motorized boats can be used by traditional fishermen to fish in local waters near the coast.
Meanwhile, mechanized boats are allowed to fish in the open sea beyond 12 nautical miles starting August 1. The Maharashtra government asserts that this ban aims to provide marine life with a breeding period and to enhance fish stocks, ultimately benefiting fishermen with better profits in the future.
