Mahabhed Mudra: A Key to Balancing Energy in the Body

New Delhi, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : Practicing various mudras is essential for maintaining health in both body and mind, as outlined in yoga scriptures. One such mudra is the Mahabhed Mudra, which connects the physical, pranic, and mental dimensions of being. This advanced yogic practice is rooted in Hatha Yoga, where “maha” means great and “vedh” signifies piercing or penetrating.

Mahabhed Mudra aids in awakening the body’s primary chakras and nadis. Regular practice can help maintain energy balance and improve concentration. It is particularly beneficial for those engaged in yoga and meditation. This mudra coordinates the three main locks of the body: Mula Bandha, Uddiyana Bandha, and Jalandhara Bandha, facilitating the awakening of Kundalini energy and piercing the Sushumna nadi.

Ancient texts like Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Gheranda Samhita describe this mudra as one that grants spiritual accomplishment and guides practitioners toward higher attainment. It not only enhances mental peace and life energy but also imparts a supernatural quality to the practitioner’s personality. By activating the Muladhara chakra, it helps awaken Kundalini energy. Regular practice can alleviate issues such as constipation, hemorrhoids, and other internal disorders, while also positively influencing the pineal and pituitary glands to improve hormonal balance.

To perform this asana, sit comfortably in Padmasana (Lotus Pose) with a straight spine. Place your palms on the ground beside your thighs. Inhale deeply through the nose, hold the breath (internal kumbhaka), and engage the Jalandhara Bandha. Shift your body weight onto your hands and gently lift your body slightly, tapping your buttocks on the ground 3 to 5 times. Afterward, rest your buttocks on the ground, gradually release the bandha, and exhale.

However, individuals suffering from neck pain, cervical spondylitis, or vertigo should avoid this practice. Those with high blood pressure or heart conditions should also refrain from attempting it.
