Macron Vows Accountability After Violent Protests Erupt Across France

President Macron condemns violence in protests, pledging to hold perpetrators accountable and address public concerns over rising costs.

Paris, October 19 (Daily Kiran) : President Emmanuel Macron has taken a firm stance following violent protests that erupted in several cities across France. He stated that those who attempted to undermine or topple the country’s order must face consequences for their actions.

In a televised address, Macron condemned the violence associated with recent demonstrations, emphasizing that peaceful protesters advocating legitimate demands should not be conflated with those engaging in vandalism, looting, and destruction of public property.

“Those who have caused damage will have to pay the price,” he asserted, adding that looters must compensate for their actions. The president expressed solidarity with police officers, local representatives, and shopkeepers affected by the unrest. He announced that Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu will lead a special crisis management meeting on Monday to ensure timely assistance for those impacted.

Macron urged the government to learn from the events of Saturday and to review procedures for gathering intelligence and preparing in advance to prevent similar incidents in the future. He acknowledged the concerns raised by students in recent weeks, indicating that the government will engage with students, teachers, trade unions, employer organizations, and public officials in the coming days to find solutions to youth issues.

According to reports, inflation and rising fuel prices are significant factors behind the protests. Macron reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing purchasing power and alleviating economic burdens on the public.

Approximately 550,000 people participated in protests across France on Saturday, with farmers, climate activists, union members, and students voicing concerns over fuel prices, inflation, education, and public services. However, many protests turned violent, leading to the arrest of 2,397 individuals, as reported by the French Interior Ministry. Among the injured were 997 police officers and security personnel, seven of whom are in serious condition.

Since September, there have been numerous large-scale demonstrations by students demanding improved educational facilities and study conditions. This unrest comes at a time when public dissatisfaction with inflation, fuel prices, education, and public services is on the rise in France.
