Lula Urges Trump to Advance Dialogue with Iran During White House Meeting

Washington, May 8: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to advance the dialogue process with Iran. Following a bilateral meeting at the White House focused on trade, tariffs, and global conflicts, Lula presented Trump with a copy of the 2010 nuclear agreement mediated by Brazil and Turkey.

Speaking to reporters at the Brazilian embassy in Washington, Lula emphasized, “Dialogue is more effective than war.” He warned that military action against Iran could lead to increased global instability.

Lula stated, “I believe that dialogue is far better than war. An attack on Iran would cause damage beyond what they can imagine.” He personally handed Trump the 2010 agreement, which aimed to address Iran’s nuclear program.

He noted, “We were able to convince Iran that it would not develop nuclear weapons.” However, he accused Western nations of undermining the agreement afterward.

“It is regrettable that when we finalized that agreement, I do not understand why Obama, the European Union, and the rest of the world decided to increase pressure on Iran. Perhaps it was because the agreement was brokered by so-called ‘third world’ countries,” Lula remarked.

Lula mentioned that Trump indicated he would read the document, stating, “When I gave him the document, he said, ‘I will read it tonight.’”

The Brazilian president also expressed frustration over the lack of reform in the United Nations Security Council. He asserted that today’s world is not like it was in 1945 and that countries like Brazil, India, Germany, Japan, and South Africa should have a greater role in global decision-making.

During the White House meeting, there was no traditional Oval Office press conference. Lula explained that he intentionally chose not to speak to the media before the meeting, saying, “There was no point in holding a press conference before the meeting unless the discussions had taken place.”

Later, Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social that the meeting was “very good,” highlighting discussions on trade and tariffs between the two nations.

Lula revealed that both countries agreed to establish a joint task force within 30 days to resolve trade disputes. He expressed optimism that solutions could be found regarding tariffs and U.S. investigations related to Brazilian trade. “I am very optimistic. We want the U.S. to invest in Brazil again,” he stated.

Lula also mentioned that Brazil seeks U.S. participation in its vital mineral sector, particularly in rare earth projects. However, he clarified that Brazil does not want to remain merely a raw material exporter. “We do not want to be just an exporter,” he emphasized.

On the issue of Cuba, Lula claimed that Trump stated he has “no intention of attacking Cuba.” Lula described this as a “good sign,” adding, “Cuba wants dialogue and has long sought a solution to end the sanctions.”

This meeting occurred amid ongoing tensions in U.S.-Brazil relations over tariffs, technical regulations, and global issues, including Iran. The Trump administration is also considering new tariffs on Brazilian goods.

Despite ideological differences and historical tensions, both leaders expressed a desire to stabilize their relationship. Lula characterized the discussions as positive, noting that recent meetings have fostered a better understanding between the two leaders.
