New Delhi, February 2: The Lok Sabha witnessed a heated uproar on Monday during the budget session when a sharp debate erupted between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi over the Doklam issue. Rajnath Singh accused Rahul Gandhi of misleading the House and questioned the credibility of his statements.
During the discussion, Rahul Gandhi rejected allegations made by BJP MP Tejasvi Surya against the Congress concerning Indian culture, asserting that his party would respond firmly. He then referred to a book by former Army Chief Manoj Naravane related to the Doklam matter.
Rajnath Singh immediately challenged this reference, questioning whether the book had actually been published. He stated that since the book was not publicly released, basing statements on it was inappropriate, which led to noisy protests in the House.
The Speaker asked Rahul Gandhi to verify his source. Rahul Gandhi replied that the book was not allowed to be published by the government but insisted it was “100% authenticated.”
Responding again, Rajnath Singh said Rahul Gandhi was misleading the House because the book was not publicly available. Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah remarked that Rahul Gandhi had effectively ended the controversy by admitting the book was unpublished.
Speaker Om Birla reminded members that discussing newspaper clippings or unpublished books was not customary and that proceedings must follow established rules and procedures. He urged Rahul Gandhi to move on.
Rahul Gandhi stated that he did not want to raise the issue initially but felt compelled to respond after allegations were made against the Congress. He once again referred to Manoj Naravane’s book.
The Speaker reiterated that while members have the right to speak, it must be exercised within the rules and traditions of the House. The uproar continued throughout the session.
