Labuschagne Faces Career Defining Moment in Cape Town Test, Says OKeeffe
Marnus Labuschagnes performance in the final Test against South Africa may determine his future in cricket, warns Kerry OKeeffe.

Cape Town, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : The final day of the thrilling Test series between South Africa and Australia is set to put Marnus Labuschagne under the spotlight. With his recent struggles in form, this match in Cape Town presents a critical opportunity for Labuschagne to reclaim his career trajectory.
Former Australian cricketer Kerry O’Keeffe believes that Labuschagne will be playing for his career during the second innings of the Test. Speaking to Fox Sports, O’Keeffe remarked, “I think he’s playing for his career in this second innings. He hasn’t scored a Test century since 2023, and Saturday is pivotal for him.”
O’Keeffe noted Labuschagne’s talent but expressed concern over his inability to convert opportunities into runs. “He has been a fantastic player, but he hasn’t been scoring. He’s had enough chances, but he hasn’t managed to recover from this slump,” he added.
Brendan Julian, another former Australian all-rounder, suggested that the uncertainty surrounding Labuschagne’s future could provide him with the freedom to perform in the second innings. Julian told Fox Sports, “He seems a bit tense and isn’t looking settled at the crease. I think this is his chance to let go and make a strong comeback. I don’t believe he will play in the next Test in Perth.”
Michael Hussey also weighed in on Labuschagne’s situation, stating, “I would never say that if he doesn’t score runs this time, it’s the end of his Test career.” He acknowledged that while Labuschagne might face a temporary exit from the team, history shows that players can return and contribute positively, especially after tough patches.
Labuschagne’s Test career has been notably disappointing in recent years. He has not scored a century in his last 48 innings and has failed to reach half-century in the past three years. His last century came in 2023 at Old Trafford, and since then, his batting average has plummeted to just 24.77. Over 67 Test matches and 121 innings, he has accumulated 4,857 runs, including 11 centuries and 25 half-centuries.
As the final day of the Cape Town Test approaches, Australia requires 288 runs to secure victory against South Africa.
