Kostyuk Shocks Swiatek, Advances to French Open Quarterfinals for the First Time

Paris, May 31: Marta Kostyuk pulled off one of the biggest upsets of this year’s Roland Garros on Sunday. The Ukrainian player defeated four-time champion Iga Swiatek in straight sets, securing her place in the French Open quarterfinals for the first time.
The 15th-seeded Kostyuk showcased a fearless performance, winning 7-5, 6-1. This victory marks her 16th consecutive win on clay courts.
For Kostyuk, this win is a significant milestone. This season has established her as one of the most dangerous players on clay. After clinching titles in Ruin and Madrid, she has now reached the last eight at Roland Garros, just one win away from her first Grand Slam semifinal.
Initially, Swiatek, a four-time champion, seemed to have control over the match. Midway through the first set, she capitalized on Kostyuk’s backhand weakness, achieving the first break. When Swiatek was leading 5-4 and had a chance to serve for the set, it appeared the match was firmly in her favor.
However, the match took a dramatic turn. Kostyuk refused to let the set slip away. She broke Swiatek’s serve immediately and began to pile on the pressure with a series of powerful winners. As Swiatek served to stay in the set at 5-6, the mounting pressure became evident. Two costly double faults shifted the momentum to the Ukrainian player. Kostyuk seized the opportunity, hitting a stunning backhand winner to claim the first set.
This pivotal moment changed the entire balance of the match. Although Swiatek managed to secure an early break in the second set, she struggled to find her rhythm on serve. Her first-serve percentage dropped below 50%, and as Kostyuk asserted her dominance from the baseline, Swiatek’s errors began to accumulate.
As the match progressed, Kostyuk’s confidence soared. She fought through a lengthy service game, solidifying her lead. She then launched a decisive attack, leaving Swiatek with no path to recovery. With powerful forehands, precise ball striking, and consistent court control, Kostyuk won six consecutive games. In the final stages, the 22-year-old forced Swiatek into repeated errors, who appeared visibly frustrated.
Statistics confirm the one-sided nature of the match. Swiatek managed only 13 winners while committing 39 unforced errors. This combination made it nearly impossible to overcome a confidently playing opponent.
Kostyuk recorded her first victory against Swiatek in four encounters, marking one of the most significant wins of her career. With this triumph, she has advanced to the Roland Garros quarterfinals, where she will face either Belinda Bencic or her fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina.
