Kolkata, August 5: The West Bengal BJP has instructed state cabinet members to meet with party legislators weekly, even when the assembly is not in session. This initiative aims to enhance coordination and address local development issues more effectively.
Amalan Bhaduri, the chief whip of the BJP legislative party, has issued directives to current state ministers to hold meetings with legislators once a week, regardless of assembly sessions. Ministers are encouraged to pay attention to local development suggestions and take action on them.
Ministers have also been requested to inform the chief whip’s office about their preferred days for these meetings. A formal schedule will be announced, detailing the days when ministers will meet with legislators. These meetings will occur in designated rooms within the assembly premises.
It remains unclear whether Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will participate in this weekly communication initiative.
This decision follows a statement made by the Chief Minister during the recently concluded extended budget session, where he emphasized that ministers should utilize their assembly offices not just as symbolic spaces but as platforms for regular dialogue with legislators. He stressed the importance of listening to legislators’ concerns and addressing issues affecting their constituencies.
According to assembly sources, legislators will need to submit their complaints, suggestions, and local issues in writing to the relevant ministers. This initiative aims to ensure prompt resolution of public grievances and improve the implementation of welfare schemes at the grassroots level.
Since taking office in May, Suvendu Adhikari has repeatedly highlighted the need for close coordination between ministers and legislators to streamline governance and service delivery. BJP legislators believe that weekly meetings will provide a dedicated platform to raise constituency-specific issues, which often become challenging due to the busy nature of assembly sessions.
