Kerala Court Sentences 10 CPI(M) Workers to 25 Years for Bomb Attack

Kannur, April 18: A significant ruling from the Thaliparamba court in Kerala has sentenced ten Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) workers to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment for their involvement in a bomb attack. This decision reflects the judiciary’s firm stance against political violence.

The verdict was delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge K.N. Prashant. The case dates back to November 27, 2011, when bombs were allegedly thrown at workers from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) near Alakode in the Timiri area.

According to the prosecution, the attack was premeditated and part of a long-standing cycle of political vendetta in Kannur. Among those sentenced is the second accused, T.V. Beenu, also known as “Udumb Beenu.” While all ten convicts received 25-year sentences, nine of them were permitted to serve their sentences concurrently, effectively reducing their time to ten years.

Included in the list of convicts is CPI(M) Panchayat member P.V. Baburaj, whose membership will be terminated following his sentencing. Other convicts include M.K. Pradeep Kumar, P.P. Sathyan, E.V. Vinod Kumar, Paleri Vijayan, K.P. Suresh, Toby, Janardhanan, and Shivaprakash.

It is noteworthy that Kannur has long been a hotspot for political clashes between CPI(M) and BJP/RSS workers. Ideological differences, local power struggles, and ground-level conflicts have often escalated into violent confrontations, resulting in numerous casualties on both sides.

The court concluded that the prosecution had proven the guilt of the accused beyond a reasonable doubt. Experts believe this ruling sends a clear message that those involved in political violence will face severe penalties, reinforcing the supremacy of the rule of law.
