Kochi, August 8: Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan met with the United States Ambassador to India, Sergio Gore, on Saturday in Kochi. The meeting also included Kerala’s Chief Secretary and other senior state officials.
During the discussion, both parties explored ways to enhance cooperation in various areas of mutual interest between Kerala and the United States. Key topics included higher education, tourism, culture, investment, and maritime development.
The Chief Minister emphasized the potential for stronger partnerships between universities and research institutions in Kerala and the US. This includes joint research projects, academic exchanges, and innovation partnerships. Both sides also discussed opportunities to strengthen cultural ties and people-to-people connections.
Ambassador Gore noted that this was his first visit to Kerala. He expressed admiration for the state’s natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and immense potential as an international tourist destination. He highlighted the promising prospects for attracting more tourists from the US, particularly in wellness and Ayurveda tourism.
The ambassador mentioned the concept of “sister cities” and suggested exploring partnerships between cities in Kerala and the US. Such collaborations could further enhance cultural, educational, economic, and interpersonal relations.
The Chief Minister also underscored Kerala’s growing potential for international investment, particularly in port, logistics, and port-based development sectors. Discussions included the possibilities related to the Vizhinjam International Port and Kochi Port, covering maritime logistics, shipbuilding and repair, green bunkering, and related industries.
The ambassador expressed interest in promoting greater partnerships between American companies and Kerala. He stated his commitment to connecting more US businesses with investment opportunities in the state. This, he noted, would enhance investment and strengthen economic ties between Kerala and the US.
The meeting also addressed ways to deepen connections with the Malayali community in the US and its business networks. In this context, the Chief Minister proposed considering the establishment of an “Invest Desk” in the US. This initiative aims to facilitate investment inquiries, connect potential investors and companies with opportunities in Kerala, and strengthen ties between the Malayali diaspora and the broader American business community.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties expressed their desire to advance mutually beneficial cooperation opportunities between Kerala and the US and to maintain close contact in the future.
