Karwa Chauth: Timing and Rituals Explained by Kalka Ji Temples Mahant Surendra Nath Avadhut

Learn about the auspicious timing and rituals of Karwa Chauth as explained by Mahant Surendra Nath Avadhut from Kalka Ji Temple.

New Delhi, October 29 (Daily Kiran) : The auspicious festival of Karwa Chauth is being celebrated across the country today. Married women have undertaken a nirjala (waterless) fast, praying for the long life and happiness of their husbands. Mahant Surendra Nath Avadhut, the head priest of the famous Kalka Ji Temple in Delhi, shared insights on the festival’s significance, rituals, and the auspicious timing for worship.

Mahant Avadhut explained that the Karwa Chauth fast is observed annually on the fourth day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. This year, the sacred fast falls on Thursday, October 30. On this day, married women fast from sunrise until the moonrise, wishing for their husbands’ long life, good health, and a joyful married life.

He noted, “Women observe a fast from sunrise until moonrise, praying for the longevity of their husbands. The worship of the entire Shiva family holds special significance on this day.”

Regarding the rituals, Mahant Avadhut stated that on the day of the fast, devotees perform worship of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Kartikeya, and Lord Ganesha, followed by listening to the Karwa Chauth story. After the story, married women participate in the tradition of exchanging ‘karwas,’ also known as ‘baina.’

He provided details about the auspicious timing for worship, stating, “This year, the favorable time for the rituals is from 5:38 PM to 6:56 PM. Performing the rituals during this window is highly beneficial.”

Mahant Avadhut emphasized that the rituals performed at moonrise are the most crucial part of the fast. During this time, women place a lamp under a sieve, first viewing the moon and then their husband’s face through the same sieve. They then break their fast by drinking water offered by their husbands.

He concluded, “This act strengthens the love and affection between husband and wife. It is hoped that the husband will live a long life, remain healthy, and that their marital life will be filled with happiness. With the blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, the wishes of all women observing this fast are fulfilled.”
