Bengaluru, April 21: The Karnataka BJP has expressed its approval of the High Court’s decision to maintain the grading system for Hindi and other third languages in Class 10. The party stated that this ruling is a significant embarrassment for the Congress government.
During a media briefing on Tuesday, senior BJP leader and the opposition whip in the Legislative Council, N. Ravikumar, noted that the Karnataka High Court has mandated that students should receive grades for the Hindi language. This decision has caused considerable embarrassment for the state government, the education minister, and the education department.
He criticized the government’s approach to education, describing it as decisions made “like a mad king.” About a month ago, the Karnataka government had announced a decision regarding the Hindi examination, stating that whether a student passes or fails in Hindi would not be taken seriously.
The education minister reportedly mentioned that students could choose to take the exam or not, and that grades would be assigned instead of marks.
Students and parents who had prepared diligently insisted that the examination should be conducted properly. However, the government maintained that Kannada is the first language, English the second, and Hindi the third; hence, it should not be treated with seriousness.
Ravikumar explained that many had challenged this matter in court, and now the ruling has come. Students have studied seriously, and their dignity should not be compromised. Therefore, the court has directed that marks should be awarded instead of grades.
He stated that the High Court has effectively overturned the government’s decision. The BJP welcomes this ruling, he added, noting that it has brought relief and happiness to students and parents.
He further urged the government to cease making such “irresponsible decisions,” at least from now on.
In a blow to the Congress-led government, the Karnataka High Court directed the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) to award marks instead of grades for the Hindi subject in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) for the current academic year.
The bench, led by Justice E.S. Indiraesh, dismissed the government’s petition seeking a review of the High Court’s previous order regarding the awarding of marks for the SSLC. It is noteworthy that the state government had filed a review petition challenging the validity of the earlier order. Importantly, the state government had also questioned the correctness of a comment made in the April 15 ruling, which stated that any subsequent changes to the rules would violate Article 14 of the Constitution of India.
The High Court also directed that marks be awarded for Hindi in the 2025-26 academic year, clarifying that this order applies to all third language subjects in the SSLC examination.
The bench further noted that approximately 83 percent of students are passing the Pre-University Course (Class 12) examinations.
The court remarked that if the goal is to pass everyone, then the examination should be entirely canceled.
The court stated that while the government is free to take appropriate steps after establishing rules, it is not right to change the evaluation system before the rules are in place.
