Shimla, August 13: In Himachal Pradesh, Public Works and Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh inaugurated 30 electric buses for various areas in Shimla. During the event, he responded to remarks made by actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut regarding the orphan and widow cess.
Minister Singh stated, “For us, all of Himachal Pradesh is one. It is our duty to ensure development across the state. We are responsible for providing every facility to the people in rural Shimla. Development projects worth approximately ₹650 crores are underway in our constituency. We recognized the need for more buses in our area, and this is a positive start with the launch of these 30 electric buses.”
Addressing Ranaut’s comments, the Urban Development Minister remarked, “The rising prices of petrol and diesel are not set by the Himachal government; they are increasing nationwide. First, gather accurate information before making such statements in the media. A cess of just 60 paise has been imposed for the welfare of orphaned children, widowed women, and the poor. She should discuss the rising diesel and petrol prices across the country first. Why is there no talk about E20?”
He further added, “We have yet to receive ₹1,500 crores that were promised by the Prime Minister. I urge you to go to Delhi and discuss this with him to secure funds for Himachal.”
On August 12, the Himachal Pradesh government decided to increase the prices of petrol and diesel by 60 paise per liter. This increase is not due to rising crude oil prices or inflation but is a new tax imposed by the state government, termed the ‘Widow and Orphan Cess.’
Regarding road conditions, he mentioned, “We are receiving daily updates. Approximately 200-250 roads were closed, but by evening, around 75-100 had reopened. Machinery has been deployed at various locations, and we are continuously monitoring the situation. We are working to ensure that our farmers and orchardists face no difficulties.”
